Upgrade stormwater infrastructure to address flooding concerns and protect homes, roads, and natural resources.
We will address flooding issues in West Windsor with our multi-pronged approach.
We will continue to:
- Investigate and implement a program to alleviate flooding at the train station and Washington Road, including improving infrastructure, raising sidewalks, changing pipes under the train station tunnels, increasing maintenance, improving monitoring, changing grates and doing what is necessary to increase water flow and increased proper retention at peak times.
- Insure that new developments meet or exceed water runoff requirements with sustainable green infrastructure, which generally means less runoff than the current property before new development.
- Insure that properties properly maintain their stormwater handling systems and abide by their stormwater plans.
- Investigate new technologies to monitor stormwater and possible bottlenecks before a flood happens due to blockage or other problems.
- Improve and upgrade local storm sewers to prevent flooding, such as the current project in the Berrien City area.
- Lobby with state officials for a comprehensive regional approach to handle the Millstone River flooding problem, to protect against flooding due to upstream towns.
Protecting our water and addressing flooding requires a regional approach, and West Windsor is leading the way. As a founding member of the Watershed Institute’s Assunpink and Upper Millstone Watershed Working Groups, our town has been a key driver in bringing watershed communities together to tackle these shared challenges as we all work on our MS4 permits. This collaboration with West Windsor’s strong support has already resulted in a joint grant proposal to the DEP, a model we believe can be used across New Jersey.
